Pride and Prejudice<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a\u00a0novel of manners\u00a0by\u00a0Jane Austen<\/a>, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character\u00a0Elizabeth Bennet\u00a0as she deals with issues of\u00a0manners, upbringing,\u00a0morality,\u00a0education, and\u00a0marriage\u00a0in the society of the\u00a0landed gentry<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in\u00a0Hertfordshire, near\u00a0London.<\/p>\n

Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of “most loved books<\/strong>” such as\u00a0The Big Read<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0It has become one of the most popular novels in\u00a0English literature<\/strong>\u00a0and receives considerable attention from\u00a0literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen’s memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20\u00a0million copies worldwide.<\/p>\n

The novel centres on Elizabeth Bennet<\/strong><\/em>, the second of the five daughters of a country gentleman. Mr Bennet<\/strong><\/em> is a bookish man, and somewhat neglectful of his responsibilities. Mrs Bennet<\/strong><\/em> is a woman lacking in social graces and primarily concerned with finding suitable husbands for her five daughters. Jane Bennet<\/strong><\/em>, the eldest daughter, is distinguished by the kindness of her attitudes and her beauty; Elizabeth Bennet<\/strong><\/em>, the second daughter, shares her father’s keen wit and occasionally sarcastic outlook; Mary<\/strong><\/em> is not pretty, but is studious, devout and musical albeit lacking in taste; Kitty<\/strong><\/em>, the fourth sister follows where her younger sister leads, while Lydia<\/strong><\/em> is flirtatious and unrestrained.<\/p>\n

Many critics take the novel’s title as a starting point when analysing the major themes of\u00a0Pride and Prejudice<\/i><\/strong>; however, Robert Fox cautions against reading too much into the title because commercial factors may have played a role in its selection. “After the success of\u00a0Sense and Sensibility<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, nothing would have seemed more natural than to bring out another novel of the same author using again the formula of antithesis and alliteration for the title. It should be pointed out that the qualities of the title are not exclusively assigned to one or the other of the protagonists; both Elizabeth and Darcy display pride and prejudice.”

A major theme in much of Austen’s work is the importance of environment and upbringing on the development of young people’s character and morality.\u00a0Social standing and wealth are not necessarily advantages in her world, and a further theme common to Jane Austen<\/strong><\/em>‘s work is ineffectual parents. In\u00a0Pride and Prejudice<\/i><\/strong>, the failure of Mr and Mrs Bennet as parents<\/strong><\/em> is blamed for Lydia’s lack of moral judgment<\/strong><\/em>; Darcy, on the other hand, has been taught to be principled and scrupulously honourable<\/strong><\/em>, but he is also proud and overbearing.Kitty, rescued from Lydia’s bad influence and spending more time with her older sisters after they marry, is said to improve greatly in their superior society<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n
